Yes, recreational cannabis is legal in Vancouver for adults 19 and older, but there are still rules about how much you can possess, where you can smoke or vape, where you can buy cannabis, how it can be transported and whether you can grow it at home.

In British Columbia, adults can carry up to 30 grams of dried non-medical cannabis or its equivalent in public, purchase up to the same amount in one transaction and keep up to 1,000 grams per household at home. Vancouver also has local restrictions, including a smoking ban in parks, on beaches and along the seawall.

These limits apply to non-medical cannabis. Different rules may apply to authorized medical cannabis.

Is Weed Legal in Vancouver?

Yes. Non-medical cannabis is legal in Vancouver under Canada’s federal cannabis framework and B.C.’s provincial rules.

In British Columbia, you must be 19 or older to:

  • buy cannabis
  • possess cannabis
  • consume cannabis
  • enter a cannabis store
  • grow non-medical cannabis

Someone under 19 cannot enter a cannabis retail store even when accompanied by an adult.

Legalization does not mean cannabis can be purchased or consumed anywhere. Provincial rules and Vancouver bylaws still apply.

For more detail on age requirements, Budora already has a guide explaining whether you can buy weed in Canada at 19.

How Much Weed Can You Carry in Vancouver?

Adults aged 19 and older can possess up to 30 grams of dried non-medical cannabis, or its equivalent, in public.

The same 30-gram-equivalent limit applies to a single purchase. At home, the current B.C. limit is 1,000 grams of dried cannabis or its equivalent per household.

If you are carrying several different types of cannabis products, check their cannabis-equivalent amounts rather than assuming everything follows the dried-flower weight.

Can You Smoke Weed in Public in Vancouver?

Sometimes.

B.C. generally allows adults to smoke or vape cannabis in public places where tobacco smoking and vaping are permitted. However, provincial and local restrictions remove many common public spaces from that rule.

Cannabis smoking or vaping is restricted in places such as:

  • public buildings and workplaces
  • common areas of apartments and condominiums
  • areas near building entrances, windows and air intakes
  • bus stops and transit shelters
  • playgrounds
  • sports fields
  • skate parks
  • swimming and spray-pool areas
  • public patios

Vancouver goes further in its parks. Smoking is prohibited on park land, beaches and seawalls, including areas such as Stanley Park and Vancouver’s public beaches. The City currently lists a minimum $250 fine for smoking in a regulated park space.

So the fact that cannabis is legal does not mean you can smoke it anywhere outdoors.

Can You Smoke Weed on a Vancouver Sidewalk?

There is no blanket rule saying every Vancouver sidewalk is automatically a legal place to smoke cannabis.

The relevant question is whether smoking or vaping is prohibited at that particular location. For example, restrictions apply near entrances, windows, air intakes and transit stops, and other local rules may apply depending on where you are.

Check your immediate surroundings rather than assuming that being outside makes cannabis smoking permitted.

Where Can You Legally Buy Cannabis in B.C.?

Legal non-medical cannabis in British Columbia is sold through:

  • licensed private cannabis retailers
  • government-operated BC Cannabis Stores

Legal cannabis products must comply with federal packaging requirements and carry an excise stamp. B.C. also uses a green provincial cannabis excise stamp.

For online shopping, B.C. says legal cannabis retailers may ship non-medical cannabis only within B.C. The Province identifies several warning signs of an illegal online seller, including:

  • no licensed physical retail location
  • no age gate on the website
  • shipping cannabis outside B.C.
  • cannabis without an excise stamp
  • allowing purchases beyond legal possession limits
  • selling other drugs or substances alongside cannabis

The Province maintains a list of legal B.C. cannabis retailers for consumers who want to verify a store.

Budora also has a separate informational guide on how to buy weed in Vancouver if you want to understand common shopping terms and product categories.

What Are the Rules for Cannabis in a Vehicle?

You can transport cannabis in a vehicle, but how it is stored matters.

B.C. currently allows:

  • up to 30 grams of dried non-medical cannabis or equivalent in its original unopened packaging
  • up to 30 grams in opened packaging or without packaging if it is inaccessible to the driver, such as in the trunk
  • up to four cannabis plants, provided they are not budding or flowering

Driving while impaired by cannabis remains illegal. Passengers are also prohibited from consuming cannabis in a vehicle.

Do not use the public possession limit as a guide to whether you are safe to drive. Possession and impairment are separate legal issues.

Budora has a separate article about driving after cannabis use for readers looking specifically for that topic.

Can You Grow Weed at Home in Vancouver?

Generally, yes, but there are restrictions.

Adults 19 and older may grow up to four non-medical cannabis plants per household, not four plants per person. You must ordinarily live at the residence where the plants are grown.

B.C. also requires that home-grown cannabis plants not be visible from a public place such as:

  • a street
  • sidewalk
  • park
  • sports field
  • K-12 school property

Cannabis cannot be grown in a home licensed for child care. Landlords and strata corporations can also restrict or completely prohibit non-medical cannabis growing.

What About Cannabis in Condos and Rental Homes?

Living in a condo or rental does not automatically give you unrestricted permission to smoke or grow cannabis.

B.C. allows rental-property owners and strata corporations to impose additional rules on cannabis smoking and cultivation. Vancouver also notes that strata corporations and building managers may create and enforce their own no-smoking rules.

Common areas are more restrictive than private residences. Provincial rules prohibit cannabis smoking and vaping in common areas of apartment buildings, condominiums and dormitories.

Before smoking or growing cannabis at home, check your tenancy agreement or strata bylaws.

Can Tourists Buy and Use Cannabis in Vancouver?

Visitors must follow the same B.C. rules that apply while they are in the province, including the 19+ minimum age, public possession limit and restrictions on where cannabis can be consumed.

The most important travel rule concerns Canada’s border.

It is illegal to take cannabis across Canada’s international border without an applicable exemption. This includes products containing THC or CBD, regardless of whether cannabis is legal at your destination.

That means a visitor should not take leftover cannabis from Vancouver across the U.S. border or onto an international flight leaving Canada.

Vancouver Weed Rules Come Down to More Than Legalization

The simplest answer to “is weed legal in Vancouver?” is yes, for adults 19 and older.

The more useful answer is that different rules govern:

  • how much cannabis you can possess
  • where you can smoke or vape
  • where you can legally buy it
  • how cannabis is carried in a vehicle
  • whether you can grow it at home
  • what your landlord or strata permits
  • whether cannabis can travel across a border

Knowing which rule applies to your situation is more useful than treating cannabis legalization as a blanket permission.

Because cannabis laws and municipal bylaws can change, check current Government of B.C. and City of Vancouver guidance when the legal answer matters.
